The meaning of what is happening is reduced to an ordinary battle with monsters, and this will happen in a kind of step-by-step format, where each participant in the battle will strike in turn. Of course, in the beginning you will often lose, but the experience gained and rewards will allow you to develop your character, who will gradually be able to fight with more powerful opponents and get even more experience and rewards.
